âYou must be out of your mind!â Beth says.
âBeth, just listen to me. Iâm not suggesting we stay there for long. Just until we get back on our feet,â Adam says.
Beth is fuming. Her face is red, and Adam knows that canât be good. Heâs not just playing with fire. Heâs stoking it with gasoline.
âIâm not moving in with your mom, no way in hell,â she says.
âBeth, come on. We really have no choice here. We canât find an apartment, and Iâm still jobless. Weâre lucky enough that you can work remotely so that we can move in with her.â
âDo you not remember the way things went the last time we all lived together?â
âI know, but things will be different this time.â
âYeah. Sheâll be able to bully me more, and I wonât be able to do anything about it.â
Adam remembers all the fights, all the tension between him and Beth, all the problems that triangulated between the three of them.
The way your mom hit Beth over the head with a frying pan.
He had completely forgotten about it, and now that he remembers, he gets angry again, but only for a moment. His momâs willingness to help far overshadows everything bad.
âItâs going to be different this time,â he repeats. âItâs a big house. Weâll have our own room. If you donât feel like communicating with anyone, you can isolate yourself to a few rooms and spend an entire day without ever running into another person.â
âHave you even talked to her about it? What makes you think sheâd want me in the house?â
âI already asked her. She said we can stay as long as we want. She plans on leaving the house to us after she dies anyway, so we donât need to behave like weâre guests there.â
âWe are guests there, Adam, and I donât want you to think we will be anything else because, the moment you start to get comfortable, weâll never get out of there. Just remember what happened last time.â
âI know, and Iâm sorry, but Iâll protect you this time.â
âIâm not talking about that, Adam. Iâm talking about you not wanting your mom to leave. You knew she was okay, but you didnât urge her to leave.â
Adam presses his lips together. A part of him knew Beth knew he had been postponing his momâs departure, but she never said anything until now.
âThis is going to help us. Once weâre back on our feet, weâre out of there, and we can go back to living our normal lives. Just you, me, and our baby.â
Beth puts her hands on her temples as if sheâs suffering from a huge headache. She turns away from Adam and chants, âNo, this canât be happening. This is a dream. A freaking nightmare. It has to be.â
Adam approaches her. He lays one finger on her shoulder. When she doesnât break away from him or tell him to leave her alone, he puts his entire hand there.
âBeth, I know you donât like this. I donât like it either,â he says.
